Design des Monats

What is our idea of product design?

How important are designers as authors and celebrities?

Are trends valuable?

http://designdesmonats.com/

The Design Of The Month exhibition explores those questions in a humorous manner. Video Works, Objects and Comics invite visitors to immerse into the filter bubble of the product design environment.

A.K.A – Survival Strategies in Three Parts

Cereals and Luca Lozano present:

A.K.A
Strategic Survival in Three Parts

Lucas Hunter adopts a different name for each creative discipline he is involved in, but the powerful and personal hand is evident in all his work. Partly through economic necessity, transferrable skills or artistic curiosity, and has developed his communication strategies to meet the professional demands and expectations from the niche scenes in which he operates.

During his days at university, he developed a keen appreciation of graffiti, photography, and illustration, fields in which he became active and started to make the connections which would serve him in his life as a professional. The AKA Luca Lozano produces, DJs and curates several record labels, whilst he undertakes graphic design work under the identity of Planetluke.com. Through all of his considerable output we can appreciate his skill at sampling obscure and forgotten cultural texts to explore the rudimentary aesthetics of the youth cultures he admired as an adolescent.

References to music, flyers and adverts that stem from 70s punk, 80s hip-hop and 90s rave are prevalent throughout his body of work, a homage to DIY scenes where one individual was responsible for all aspects of a production, a label or an event. The faults in the original texts are celebrated: a naïve melody, saturated snare, the hiss of a needle on a record. Images are stretched as if poorly photocopied, magnified beyond clear recognition, hastily cut to to the point of abstraction.

His latest experiments on canvas under another new AKA, finally using his given name, have allowed him to escape the control imposed by working with a computer, and the physical act of painting demonstrates his competence for analogue composition and striking images on a larger scale. Increasingly influenced by a refined selection of abstract painters to come from the outsider art and graffiti world, his productions are the latest development of bold, mature and determined artist.

Poor People Relax Me

Poor People Relax Me
Mexico/Germany (2017)
40 min. English with Deutsch UT

A performative documentation of Clara Winter’s process of spending film funds as she attempts to make a site specific project in Mexico without falling into the cliches of poverty-porn and neocolonial views on developing countries and foreign cultures.

Throughout the film, she is confronted with her own privilege, superficiality and the banality of her own project.

There will be plenty of time after the screening for filmmakers and audience to engage in discussion about the ethics of representation, aesthetic exploitation and the (perceived) need to be more transparent about art’s means of production and display.

Eugeny Yufit

Screening: Eugeny Yufit

Eugeny Yufit. Necrorealism. The Beginning.
Introduced by Olesya Turkina

The radical movement Necrorealism emerged in Leningrad in the early 1980th at the height of stagnation period. It was born by the social revolt, the love of absurdism and forensic medicine books of reference. In the early 1980s the father of the movement, Eugeny Yufit, fixated the imitation of psychopathic behavior on the 16mm film, performed with the group of his associates guided by him — meaningless fights in suburbs and commuter rail, beating a mannequin in gateway of forsaken house. He invented zombi make-up portraying his friends in black-and-white series of staged photos. Deviant collective actions, initiated by Yufit, were compared at that time with the punk movement as well as with the liberating energy of Medieval carnival described by Mikhail Bakhtin. Yufit did not like any of those comparisons. He preferred personally invented necrorealist triad: dullness, impudence and maturity. In 1984 Yufit founded one of the first independent film studious in the USSR — Mzhalalafilm. In 1989 he was invited in experimental workshop of Alexander Sokurov at Lenfilm studio. Since 1989 Yufit made seven full-length 35mm films along with series of black and white photos and pictures. His films revise social-technological utopias, which were born in 1920-s and 1960-s. His protagonists were excluded from the social order. They were forced to roam around outskirts of big cities. Neither living, nor dead they wander around the remnants of worldwide capitalistic ideology that enslaves human beings no less than totalitarian regimes. Yufit died in December, 2016. This screening is a tribue to his memory.

Short Avant-Garde films made by Eugeny Yufit will be represented by Olesya Turkina, Head of Curatorial Studies MA program at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. Petersburg State University, Senior Research Fellow of Contemporary Art Department, The State Russian Museum.

Digital Nomads & Negligible Senescence

JULIA SOKOLNICKA – Digital Nomads

Digital Nomads is a documentary film that is edited live in the cinema. The film is mixed live by the director presenting it, like a DJ would mix music. Digital Nomads is an archive of documentary portraits and impressions on cultural movements in the large, international metropolias. The director observes and interviews the new types of communities bonding in the English speaking generation brought up on internet. The narrative changes each time the project is presented, and as the archive grows the research enriches in new topics and locations. The original research project „Reality and Realness“ that inspired the film was elaborating on digital intimacy and the use of cameraphones and content produced by the characters themselves in the documentary cinema. The camera follows underground culture in New York, Amsterdam and Berlin. Filmmaker and Philosopher Julia Sokolnicka tries to answer questions of how will the future communities look like and what are the challenges and peculiarities of authentic bonding in the modern western economy. The film emphasizes on importance of dialogue and conversation as a tool of intellectual exploration and the dichotomy of the real space of social interactions and the space of technology.

JULIA SOKOLNICKA born in Warsaw in 1983 is an experimental and documentary filmmaker based in Amsterdam.
She’s an author of music, and dance videos and visual concepts for theatre and commercials.
As a researcher she moves between social philosophy, video and performance.
She collaborates with artists of different origins, working in Europe and in United States.
She studied Philosophy in Warsaw University and Film Directing in Wajda School and Katowice NFTS.
She graduated from Master of Film with an artistic research degree at Nederlandse Filmacademie in Amsterdam.
Her short documentary film “Side Roads” has received a number of international awards and a distribution in Polish cultural channels TVP Kultura and Ninateka.

ANNA SOBCZAK – Negligible Senescence
„Nanomedicine, life extension, AI, transhumanism are concepts thrown around a lot, but for now, in 2017 we still get older and, disappointingly, eventually die – many of the anti-ageing programs of our decade that present themselves as the spearheads of scientific research, may be seen as contemporary versions of the mythological Fountain of Youth. Scientists turn to phenomena like the Syndrome X or Negligible Senescence, in which organisms show no or almost no symptoms of ageing, ignoring the other fascinating side of the medal: Ageing and mortality of the individual became possible and necessary with the evolution of sexual reproduction. The genetic material of an organism could be passed to its descendants, turning itself disposable. Age and its attributed aesthetic repulsiveness are the very results and indispensable condition of sexual attraction and its mechanism.

The ongoing project Negligible Senescence invites viewers to share their most intimate sign of time on their body and the stories related to them. It is of big interest to me if these signs of „living in time“ caused people feelings of shame, sadness or pride. The close-up pictures are now being posted once a day on the Instagram account NegligibleSenescence and to be published in a book, to be flicked through like a photo album of human body geology. For KMMN an interactive installation will be prepared and the testimonies will be collected during the stay in Kassel through interviews with volontaries.

ANNA SOBCZAK works and lives between Napoli (IT) and Freiburg (D), focusing on collective experience and direct interaction as artistic tool.”

Perform Interdependency

Perform Interdependency in Kassel
Public Presentation

Perform Interdependency is a co-operation between Kunsthochschule Kassel (School of Art and Design Kassel), the Athens School of Fine Arts and the BA Arts & Media at Zurich University of the Arts. Presentations a.o. are at KMMN/Interim, in front of KMMN and Kulturbahnhof, at the Weinbergbunker, and the Kunsthochschule.

Interdependency means: to learn from one another, to take care of each other, to cultivate human exchange and participation; to change perspectives; to be in touch with people, equality,
(self-)authorization, to overcome differences, policies of everyday life, performative strategies, collaboration and transformation. The combination of performativity and interdependency reflects themes being discussed in the art world at the moment. We come into being as subjects by virtue of the norms of sociability and relatedness to others. We want to think about our relationship in a radical way. For us, our connectivity is not specifically a linear process
of development, as it is a process in which we are all relational
and interdependent beings. “We do not simply move ourselves, but are ourselves moved by what is outside us, by others, but also by whatever ‘outside’ resides in us. For instance, we are moved by others in ways that disconcert, displace, and dispossess us” (Judith Butler, Athena Athanasiou).

No Signal – Niko Solorio in Concert

10 years ago video artist and experimental musician Niko Solorio made his musical debut in Kassel performing under the moniker of POCKET NIKO. He returns on June 14th to perform updated versions of some of his older material while presenting songs from his forthcoming album entitled ANGEL. Solorio’s musical stylings have been described as “Neo-Medieval-Minimalist-Electro-Pop” as well as “Global-Electro-SuperCorn-with 90’s Fetish”.

Born in Los Angeles in 1979, Solorio earned a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts (2007). Following his graduation from CalArts, Solorio attended the Kunsthochschule Kassel in Germany as a guest student of video artist Bjørn Melhus and later received his MFA from Transart Institute.

Niko Solorio has performed and exhibited his work both in the U.S. and abroad including shows at the Grand Hotel Londres; (Istanbul), Transvizualia; (Gdynia), Kunstverein Hannover;(Hannover), Redcat; (Los Angeles), X-Initiative;(New York), Fanfulla 101; (Rome), Mudam Luxembourg; (Luxembourg), Cercle Blanc;(Berlin), PS1; (New York), How To Become A Cult Leader; (London), and Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles; (Los Angeles).

We build an educational system which consists of politically motivated and artistic initiatives for sharing knowledge, and of proposals by thinkers who see education as decisive for social change. Texts, documentations, manifestos and sketches of educational models are united in a Symposion entitled: The School of Everything. The Symposion takes place in both Kassel and Athens. We shift from learning to sharing. We decriminalize sharing because we would like to enjoy the pleasure of giving. We liberate ourselves from the strictures of “Homo Sapiens”, a construct imposed upon life. We will transform the educational system of Europe.
